I have always enjoyed the creative aspects of doing deals. Twenty-plus years of healthcare industry finance experience have taught me that there are many ways to look at a business, to understand a market. You see four or five similar businesses, and you realize that each one has figured out a piece of the puzzle. Which one has the best chance of winning? Should you, and then can you, get them together? You meet entrepreneurs and CEOs who really understand what they need to do to move a business forward. Can you find investment terms that work for both parties?
I've been the CFO of four companies, so I know how to play the game. When we see entrepreneurs, we’re looking for people who have a chess master’s sense of their industry. They need to know how their business will move the market, how other firms are likely to respond, and how they’ll adapt to that response. We need to feel confident that we are working with a person and a team that is looking four or five moves ahead, without losing sight of what they need to do today.
