I’ve always been interested in interpreting financial information. What is the story the financials are telling? The interesting part is unpacking the key financial assumptions on which the financial plan is based. What is the pricing model? What are the key drivers to revenues? What is the fixed and variable cost structure? Why do they need funding? Are they spending capital on the right business drivers? If we can answer these questions, we can get clarity on whether or not we want to be involved.
The story we are looking for is a consumer value story. As more people gain control of their healthcare dollars, new business models will emerge to meet these needs. I absolutely believe consumers will make better value choices for themselves than anyone else will. The successful, consumer-driven companies will provide value differentiation in price transparency, service level and delivery, financing, information support, convenience, and outcomes. Those are the businesses in which we’ll invest.
